About

An Independent Reference for Waterproof Jackets

Waterproof clothing is one of the most heavily marketed categories in outdoor equipment and one of the least clearly explained. This site exists to document it accurately rather than to sell it.

Why this exists

A shopper comparing two shells is usually comparing two marketing pages. One quotes a hydrostatic head figure, the other quotes none; one names a proprietary laminate, the other names a proprietary coating; neither explains what the numbers were measured under or what they predict in real rain. We build the reference layer that is missing: structured records of membranes, brands and jackets, with sources, dates, and a firm line between what a manufacturer says and what we think.

What is in the database

Technologies, brands, jackets, activity requirements, comparisons and reference articles are all stored as structured records rather than as prose pages. That means a specification is written once and shown consistently everywhere it appears, comparisons are generated from the same figures as the reviews, and a correction propagates across the site instead of surviving in three places.

How the site is funded

The site is currently unmonetised. If retailer links are added in future they will be disclosed on the pages that carry them, they will not affect scores or award assignments, and no brand will be able to buy placement, coverage, or a category win. We will not add sponsored articles.

The standards we hold ourselves to

  • No invented figures, ever.
  • No claimed testing that did not happen — physical testing is labelled and dated.
  • No thin pages published to occupy a search term; unwritten topics stay unindexed.
  • Every specification traceable to a source, with a verification date on the page.
