Hours of rain find the weak points rather than the fabric: unsealed seams, an unprotected main zip, a hood that won't hold its shape, and cuffs that wick water up your sleeve.
Fit, hood control and pressure resistance
Wind drives water through gaps and against the fabric under pressure, which is where laminate construction and a well-patterned hood matter more than any figure on a hangtag.
Durability plus layering room
The shell needs to shed heavy, wet precipitation while leaving room for insulation underneath. An insulated shell simplifies this at the cost of adaptability.
Ventilation, not membrane specification
When the air outside is already saturated, no membrane can move much moisture. Mechanical venting — pit zips, a two-way main zip, mesh-backed pockets — is what keeps you tolerable.
Breathability and wind resistance
Waterproofing is barely tested here. A breathable shell or a membrane-backed softshell is usually more comfortable than a heavy hardshell.
