How We Test — And When We Don't

Most jacket coverage online blurs the line between reading a spec sheet and wearing a jacket in the rain. We keep that line visible on every page.

Two clearly separated states

Every jacket record on this site carries one of two labels, and the label is generated from the data rather than written by hand.

  • Research-based. The review is built from manufacturer documentation, published standards, materials specifications and the technical record. We have not worn the jacket. No performance claim on such a page is presented as an observation.
  • WJ Lab Tested. The jacket physically passed through our hands under the protocol below, and the test date is published on the review.

At the time of writing, every jacket in the database is research-based. We would rather say that plainly than imply field testing that has not happened.

The protocol we apply when we do test

When a jacket enters testing, the same sequence is applied so that results are comparable between jackets rather than between reviewers.

  • Specification verification: every figure on the review is checked against current manufacturer documentation before testing starts.
  • Construction inspection: seam taping, zip type and storm flaps, hood architecture, cuff and hem hardware, pocket placement relative to a pack hipbelt.
  • Controlled wetting: sustained shower exposure of at least 30 minutes, noting wet-out on the face fabric, ingress at seams and closures, and behaviour at pressure points such as shoulders under a loaded pack.
  • Aerobic use: uphill effort in the jacket to observe internal condensation, venting effectiveness and clamminess at a stated temperature and effort level.
  • Fit and mobility: reach overhead and across the body, hood movement with and without a helmet where relevant, layering room over a midlayer.
  • Care cycle: at least one wash and reproofing following the manufacturer's instructions, noting any change in beading behaviour.

What we will not do

  • We do not publish hydrostatic head or breathability numbers of our own. We are not an accredited laboratory, and inventing figures would be worse than citing none.
  • We do not estimate specifications a manufacturer has not published. Those fields read "not publicly specified by manufacturer".
  • We do not describe a jacket's feel, fit or condensation behaviour as observed fact on a research-based page.
