Face-fabric tears and punctures: the home repair
Patagonia states that gear patches can repair small holes and tears and that Tenacious Tape does not invalidate its Ironclad Guarantee. Other makers’ repair and warranty instructions may differ; check yours before patching.
Technique matters more than the brand of patch. Rab's waterproof repair guidance: clean the area as much as possible, choose a patch large enough to overlap the damage well — preferably circular, since square corners lift — avoid patching across stitching, and smooth it down carefully. Rab is explicit that a field patch is a temporary fix until a Service Centre repair; for a jacket that sees regular hard use, treat home patches the same way.
Seam tape, zips and delamination: the escalation cases
Arc'teryx's repair guide draws the line precisely: seam tape that is lifting, delamination, major panel tears, or a failing zipper are signs to escalate to warranty repair or a dedicated repair service. Its guide also warns that GORE-TEX hardshells are trickier to patch than ordinary apparel — the laminate construction can make adhesive adhesion less reliable, and a poor fix can compromise waterproof integrity.
Gore's instruction is the strictest: if your product is damaged, it needs permanent repair by a Gore authorised repair centre or the manufacturing brand — and acting promptly extends the garment's life and maintains guarantee coverage. No official source we reviewed publishes a DIY procedure for rebonding seam tape; the absence is itself informative. Ironing loose tape back down is not a documented manufacturer procedure.
Delamination: seek a repair assessment
Laminate separation can make repair impractical. Patagonia lists delaminated items as unrepairable; Gore’s UK repair service excludes excessive delamination. These service terms do not establish that every small separated area on every garment is beyond repair.
Ask for an assessment of local separation or widespread bubbling. Do not assume a patch, glue or DWR treatment will restore a separated laminate; repair feasibility is garment-specific.
Use the warranty route first
Patagonia, Arc’teryx, Rab, Berghaus and Millet publish repair-service information, with regional and eligibility limits. Check the relevant service and warranty before attempting a home repair.
Send the jacket clean and dry as the relevant service instructs, and ask about turnaround, cost, cosmetic changes and expected repair outcome. A professional repair is not automatically a guarantee that every aspect of performance returns to as-new condition.
